I am intersex
Talking about gender topics has never been easy. It is an intricate issue per se as it implies several biological and cultural aspects and it is often surrounded by ideological preconceptions.
Talking about intersex is even more challenging as on top of the mentioned difficulties, the word itself – let alone its challenging dynamics – is virtually unknown by the vast majority of the public.
We came up with a script that in our eyes was delicate, poetic and clear enough. But what about in everyone else’s eyes? To find an answer to this we involved Fifth Beat, a research and design studio that created a focus group with people from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. After some adjustments based on those newfound insights, we were ready to animate.
How did we get there:
We wanted to tell the inspiring story of a family that everybody could identify with and we wanted to convey a vivid feeling. It came natural to opt for traditional animation techniques as they would have allowed us to give a more authentic life to the characters and ensure a human touch behind the production.
A special voice over:
Our favourite part of the video:
The father that stops the intimidating doctor armed with a scalpel, hurray!
On the media:
Our media partner for this project was Buzz Feed LGBT, one of the most successful global source of lgbti news on the web. Thanks to this collaboration the video spread widely on web reaching several thousands of views the first very first day of publishing.
In the community:
On the Instagram account of Pidgeon, the activist who made the original voice over for the video, the animation was particularly appreciated:

Today is #IntersexDayOfSolidarity & Remembrance! It marks Herculine Barbin’s birthday. Barbin was a French intersex person persecuted, essentially, by the state in the 19th century. Please mark this day by viewing this new animated video envisioning the world as it should be for babies born intersex. • • Note-while I did the voice over, this is not my story. This is the story I envision for our children, the story that’s already happening for so many thanks to decades of intersex activism all around the globe. After watching, please sign our petition to #EndIntersexSurgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital (⛓link in bio⛓) • • ⚠️ CC version of video can be found in my story highlights > resources. ⚠️ Shoutout to Eugenio Orsi, the team at Antimatter and Ilga Europe (they are tagged in video) for making this possible. • • • • • • #intersexdayofremembrance #intersex #intersexisbeautiful #intersexstories #intersexstoriesnotsurgeries #toocutetobebinary #stopigm #wewontbeerased
